Worth watching? Yes. But I reckon it should be best enjoyed in the private company of your own home, where you can enjoy it however you like and don't get X, Y and Z old trek fans pissing you off. I love star trek, and the movie was good, it was just the contrived jokes and last-scene defiance of physics that ticked me off really.
All in all a great film. I've been a Trek fan for well over 20 years, but this film just blew everything out of the way. I love the direction this promises to go, and would be really fascinated to see what a Next Generation film in this very same venue would look like, much less the entire 24th century.
Well done JJ. You done did good as far as I am concerned.
It was an enjoyable space adventure, but even if we forget the rest of Star Trek continuity, there are still horrible inconsistencies and errors in the film. Just getting the whole Enterprise crew together in the story was contrived and full of weird coincidences. Nero's ship shows up right at the location where Kirk would be born?
I also did not like the look of the new Enterprise, especially the interior. The bridge was way too shiny and it continued with the Trek set designer's fascination with blinking lights. Not to mention the engineering room of both the starship's Kelvin and Enterprise is reduced to masses of pipes and anachronistic levers. The bridge is too "hi-tech, Apple computer looking" and the engineering looks like a brewery or hydro plant.
And what is up with Nero and his crew? I know it is explained in the comic story arc, "Countdown" ([link]) but it would have helped if it where mentioned during Prime Spock's monologue halfway through the film.
Here is a list of inconsistencies from Ex-Astris-Scientia: [link]
However, I have to say I was impressed with the cast and thought they all did great jobs. Especially Karl Urban's Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy . Some of the characters where sidelined I thought, like Scotty (Simon Pegg), and Uhura (Zoë Saldana). Scotty does not show up until later and Uhura, though sexy as hell, is merely a romantic sub-plot. Hopefully in the next film we see her do more and show more 'Starfleet officer' action in the next film instead of being the token woman.
Another thing I REALLY enjoyed about the film was the score. With the death of both Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith (James Horner is still kicking), I was skeptical whether we would get a great Trek score that could rival the greatness of previous generations. I have to say the composer for this film, Micheal Giacchino, was awesome!
Phew, that's all for now. An enjoyable film but despite being a young adult, I have to say I enjoy the pre-Enterprise Trek better.
