STO Mirror Universe Luna U Kidding Me?

Fri Sep 28, 2012, 11:38 PM

Imperial Science Cruiser Singularity by Lord-Nalthren Theirs

Starcraft ISS Titan by stourangeau Mine

Just saw a pic of what STO is calling a Mirror Universe Luna Class. I say thee NO!!!!
The STO LUNA class is still way way off from how the USS is supposed to be.

And even farther off from how I envisioned a Imperial Luna to look like. All it is is here is a Repaint,
NO STO you really messed up with this one.

I would of been more than happy to let you have the I.S.S. Titan Design to go with my U.S.S Titan.

And you wonder why I don't play the game.
Besides the 2 plus hour download and the fact that
I have to use my wife's PC since you won't make a
version that plays on the MAC.

Feel Free anyone who plays and is active on the STO Forums to pass my
distaste for this GOD awful excuse for a Luna class.

Sean

Update 10-1-12

Nothing like causing a SH!t storm on Cryptic's forums.  I guess I have people pissed that I would even suggest
getting the Luna fix or having a correct Mirror ship. And I have others supporting me.

I would be happy with a few fixes to the Luna and see the Devs fix some of the other issue that players are
talking about.

As it is right now I still don't play the game, but I am a big fan.  They have come up
with some great design and some really bad ones, I just would like to see the quality they put
into uniforms put into the ships as well.

Update 10-1-2012 5:48pm

I just got an email from Brandon W. Felczer - Community Manager - Star Trek Online
and I will get back to him with my concerns on the Luna.
It sounds like the Luna may be heading back to the Digital Spacedock in the future, just no stardate yet.

I take that as promising and plan on working with them in every way I can to get her looking right.

I am not sure about the I.S.S. getting retouched, but atleast it sounds like the U.S.S. might get an overhaul.

I don't play STO, or any online game for that matter, but what you describe should be of no surprise to anyone. The people who run online games, in general, have no idea what a franchise like Star Trek is all about to the genuine fans. All they care about is making money, lots of it. Staying true to the vision is unimportant. All that matters is money. And there are countless clueless kids out there more than willing to give it to them.

If I want to game in the Trek universe, I'll use the old FASA ST RPG rules, modifying them for whichever era needed, including the Mirror universe. Real roleplaying games are Old School tabletop ones; computers are for bang-zap. Fun, perhaps, but it's not real roleplaying. That requires people :)

I am not surprised, Cryptic has a one fits all approach when it comes to Ship Textures.
And they do not change Models for their Mirror Ships so they can mass produce them.
So why bother to do anything else with the Luna?
I doubt they even did the research to check if one existed already.

But hey it could have been worse!
they didn't even have the Yellow Textures when the game launched but some purple texture...

example: [link]

bah ^^

but really don't let them get off that easy with the ISS Version.
after all they have put it in a LockBox, that means every single ship that flies around in the game or sits on the exchange earned them a $
i know it is just one of the lower level prices in this lottery system of theirs, but that is no excuse to do sloppy work on it.

I'd at least demand those Nacelles and Sensor Pods of yours, to be made i doubt they will change the textures to something Red, so yellow might be the point where i say OK, but please not placed so randomly.

oh and Saucer Seperation would also be 100% possible in STO,
the Tier 5 Galaxy-Refit has it, Odyssey Class has it, Prometheus has MVAM mode... they have the technology!

they could add it and allow the Tier 5 Galaxy Class *console* to activate it for their money grab.

That's Cryptic for you. First they sign up with Perfect World so that they can finally set their game to Free 2 Play, as Cryptic so said they planned to before launching STO. Then PWE started taking over, making Cryptic do things for 'profit' that are just plain annoying and stupid. Like, Race Lockboxes...every time you kill/destroy an enemy, there's a chance of a lockbox popping up. Seriously, my bank is littered with Lockboxes of all kinds, and I've been trying to sell them, hoping someone who actually HAS money, can buy the lockboxes off me, and spend the real money for stupid Masterkeys to unlock them.

Then there is the design variants of some of these ships.... The 'Excalibur Class' is a twisted version of the beautiful Constitution Class. Then there is the other 2 Variants of the Galaxy Class...the 2 Variants that are quite literally the ugly side of the Galaxy!! I can't stand looking at one when someone flies one of them, its just too stupid, too ugly, and quite frankly, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, wouldn't be caught dead with it, and would certainly unload a huge payload of tri-cobalt torpedoes on it. It. Is. THAT. UGLY.

Even when they add in the regular versions of the ships, the Akira, Intrepid, Galaxy. some of them don't even look right. Mistakes here, mistakes there, miss-paint over there. When I saw that they added the Luna Class, I thought...oh great, wonder how badly they fucked it up...and they did, bunch of miss-placements and such, people had to point it out in screen shots for Cryptic to see how poorly they do things. Honestly, if they want to do something right, get the REAL EXPERTS TO DO IT! Otherwise spend some more time studying the real work, and add it into the game with VERY little to NO mistakes at all.

They should take your work for example and. Do. It. Right. What they are doing is more of a slap in the face to the real creators of the beauty of these ships. They're throwing them into the game without even considering the repercussions, or considering what their players would think about them. But that's 'Money Makers' for you. All they care about is Money.

Oh yeah...another thing that PWE forced Cryptic into. Joining Raptr into STO. Now people who have Raptr accounts or can get Raptr accounts...can now get Bonus Content in STO!!! *Sighs* I'm just glad I play it only to pass the time, and create my own Foundry Missions. But honestly, Cryptic will NEVER get anything right, not on the first time, maybe never.

Sorry to say this mate, but they'll never make the TE Luna look like the Luna you made for the TE. They don't have the brain capacity to replicate your brilliant work.

Just a note.. the variations are to give players customization options and believe me, customization options are always something players want.

On the point of the Luna and most other Terran ships though, they look terrible.

I understand it gives players customization and such, but they could of done a LOT better job on the variations of the Galaxy Class, rather than making 2 very horrible, very ugly variants of the Galaxy...seriously, they're hard to look at, make my eyes hurt.

I agree fully. Having been fully into this game I have actually been looking at alternatives as the lack of progress not to mention the shady tactics of the two companies has really disappointment me. Seems every Star Trek game since Activision lost the licence has been doomed to failure before it has even started.

That's Activision for you. Some...SOME...ST games they made were fine. Like Star Trek Armada and Armada II, they did a good job there, and I think people were hoping for a 3rd but course, that never happened.

So glad Bethesda got the license though, they've done a good job in most ST games, better than Activision....

Just wish they had a hand in STO...hell, I wish the previous company working on STO, with the biggest interactions there was (like being on a star ship with real players, with a wide variety of HELM controls...ENGINEERING controls...TACTICAL controls, etc. Hell, be hilarious but also annoying, if someone went to Engineering and overloaded the warp core...which I assumed they would prevent that from happening or the game would go no where.) but still...I just wished they stuck with it, so many interactions that would of made the game 100x better than STO is today. But they gave up, took their work, and now Cryptic steps in with their own idea. Just not the same....

I really enjoyed Armada and Armada 2, I still mod those games. I must also say I enjoyed the Elite Force games for their time and Bridge Commander was okay. I however found Legacy a total bust, so incomplete.

I do agree STO in the hands of another company would have been an improvement. While it has it's good points, the way they are developing it, or lack there of is a major disappointment. I can swallow a lot of what they do, not a stuck in canon fan like some, however the lack of new missions and KDF development I just can't understand.

Recently I was looking online and found some concept drawings for the game before Cryptic took over and I must say even just for concept art, they were darn impressive. Starfleet Academy for example was huge, like 6x the size of the SFA we have in STO. It's such a shame that wasn't the final product we received. It would've been epic.

Agreed, Armada, Armada 2, the Elite Force games and Bridge Commander were fine. But anything else Activision made just didn't seem to do well. Bethesda on the other hand, did do a good job with ST games, though Legacy could of been better.

Cryptic has intended to be Free to Play before they released the game, but we all know the reasons they couldn't. And the only reason they became F2P now, is because they joined with Perfect World, which I'm glad for the F2P part...but not so sure if it was a good idea to join Perfect World. Not when they keep throwing out these lockboxes for profit, or sign STO up for Raptr.... We don't need these unnecessary items, yet they continue to do it, why? Because that's all they are, is money makers. They will do anything to make money, and nothing that doesn't. They have no idea what kind of damage they are doing to the game, all they care about is profit. Bunch of Ferengi is what they are....

And yeah, those concept drawings? That was when a company, before Cryptic Studios, was working on STO. That's exactly what I was explaining, they had shots of consoles that looked like you literally had the control of a starship by the click of a mouse. The whole concept of being a member of a Player Group Crew on board a Starship was there, it was literally right there. Unless all were AIs, and you were the only player who gone through the Academy with a specific job.... Nonetheless, if they had pulled through, rather than quick and take all their work with them, it would of been the most interactive game in history.

But now we're stuck with what we got from Cryptic Studios. No incredible, full view console interactions...just simple, minor game play from Bridge Commander to Elite Force combined in one. It's a dam shame. Only reason I liked STO, was because what the previous company had in store for everyone...but now...I could care less about STO. Hell, I hardly work on the Foundry anymore, even though I've completed about 2 parts to my 'Frontlines' series, and 1 'Combat Simulation' with a very...VERY intense course and waves. I mean, you literally fight all enemy races, and I placed the Terran Empire as the very last challenger with ALL 25 enemy groups in one map. Good luck with that too, their Galaxy Dreads are a pain to kill....

Oh and because of the Foundry limitations, playing in a team is not recommended, the group sizes of each wave/enemy WILL increase the more players there are in a team. Believe me, 4 members of the Fleet and I, 5 player team tried it out...holy crap, took like 3+ Hours to get it done, and couple members left in the middle of it, so we were 3 players in a mission that still had group sizes for 5 players because we joined with 5 players...and because of Foundry's limitations...it doesn't accommodate if the player size decreases. Or if say...You're a VA lvl 50, and a friend who's lvl 30 joins...well the enemies matches to the highest level in the mission, being lvl 50. And if you leave, they STAY at lvl 50, making it impossible for a lvl 30 player to continue on without starting the mission all over.

Dam limitations...also makes players unhappy and write bad reviews on your missions...pisses me off sometimes. The limitations ain't my fault people!! It's CRYPTICS!! *sigh*

I agree with you, Cryptic had the opportunity to do MMO has vastly different and unique, but they took the save route. It seems they always take the safe route, don't have much vision at all. A great example if the single faction development, if they took a chance and finished the KDF and perhaps did the Romulans they would find the game a lot more successful. But they don't have the vision or the mentality to take a chance and do something really unique.

The game will survive despite all this, but will it flourish? Very doubtful.

Not to mention they console swapped the Mirror Luna to make it alot less viable for play. The set up it has pretty much means unless people really like the Luna (or the Mirror Luna for that matter) no one is gonna play it. Considering there are MUCH better Science set ups then this (Nebula, normal Luna ect..)

Make a stand sir, demand it be fixed. But I do see that they are understaffed for the most part and can't get everything exact. But the fact that nobody is talking to you is pathetic. The Empire wouldnt be interested in exploration for scientific value, there exlporation ships would be designed to discover new planets and conqour them. Your Luna class looks like a warship that could do that, where as STO looks just like the standard Luna class. Plus the colour is odd, Red is the empire, yellow is well;to me, peaceful. I would of hoped that someone would of done some research by looking at other depicitons from the mirror universe, but sadly that doesnt look like the case.

The ship guys have been fairly busy of late, even before CapnLogan left. I'm really not surprised they haven't gotten around to another mesh pass on the Luna, or any other ship for that matter. After all, with an F2P game, it makes more sense to work on new stuff you can make money off of than to go back and spend time on things that aren't really broken to start with.

That said, I'm rather surprised no one's gotten back to you about this. A thread's been started on the STO forums, we'll make some noise and see what happens. The Luna is a sexy beast and I'd absolutely love to see her given some more love.

Of course, even if we do get some eyes in there, I doubt they'll take you up on the Imperial Luna design. The MU isn't a terribly large player in the STO story, so unique models where they can basically just reuse the Federation models would be impractical.

As much as I wanted Imperial ships in STO, the skins look very cheaply done, they look even worse on for example the Galaxy and even on the Regent class ship I'm using it doesn't look all that good.

In fact, it kinda makes me wish they stuck with the old purple hued Terran ships, sure, it's not anywhere close to canon, but those looked better then the new updated Enterprise era skins.

It's like they made the new skins fit perfectly for one specific ship and then hoped it would transfer to any other ship and still look just as perfect.

I can truly understand your frustration and disappointment towards Cryptic. Considering the Luna is your child, your design and a lot of you and your heart has gone into the design.

If it's any relief, most of the designs in STO aren't accurate, both canon and the few fan made ones that are there. For a professional gaming company that expects money out of it's customers it's very poor indeed.

It's quite simple to explain sadly. The less effort Cryptic can put into the game, and the more money they make doing it, the more they'll just keep on doing it... The mirror ships are just different textures, no model changes from the originals what-so-ever. Just like the last batch of mirror ships they did.

I'm sure that the new ship guy (his name escapes me) would be willing to do a new model, and I'm reasonably sure that Dan Stahl would love to let him, but he probably isn't able to fit something like that in his schedule thanks to Perfect World Entertainment's own priorities for the game, which seems to be to make money the cheapest way possible. Making a model takes time as I'm sure you know, retexturing, is a lot quicker. :(

I would really love it if they did re-model the imperial version tbh, but the odds of it happening are slim to nil.

Dan Stahl is renown for breaking any promises he has made. The amount of promises to the KDF fans he has broken must be a world record.

However you are certainly right about the less effort they can make and the more money they can get out of it the better for them. This is why I am moving away from STO atm, downloading and going to try out Bioware's The Old Republic which has just gone F2P to level 15.
